Lay Coach

Reports to: High School Principal and/or Athletic Director

 

Supervises: n/a

 

Qualifications: High school diploma or GED; basic understanding of the rules, fundamentals, and strategies of the sport for which assistant/lay coaching responsibilities assigned; Must possess effective coaching techniques and skills; Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school administrators, parents, and students

 

Job Goal: To promote excellent performance in sports in a safe and sportsmanlike manner; to work cooperatively and productively with the athletic director, head coach, school administration and students and athletes

 

Employment Terms: Determined by assignment

 

Evaluation: Annually by Athletic Director

Regular Requirements:  Stand for extended periods; run, walk, jump; twist at the neck and trunk; bend at the waist; stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach with hands and arms overhead, above shoulders and horizontally; lift/move up to 50 pounds; handle objects and tools with hands and operate equipment

 

Occasional Requirements:  Ability to administer CPR; lift/move up to 75 pounds

 

Visual Requirements:  Close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, ability to adjust focus

 

Hearing/Speaking Requirements:  Adequate to exchange information and understand, follow, or communicate instructions.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

 

  1. Assists at all practices, team meetings, and competitions under the direction of the head coach.
  2. Assists the head coach in supervision of the use of assigned equipment, facilities, locker rooms, etc. and ensure that it is properly locked when not in use.  Return all equipment at the end of the season in storage-ready condition.
  3. Sets and requires high standards of good sportsmanship and safety from all players on and off the field and report any and all misconduct, questionable behavior, or suspected failure to comply with district rules and procedures to head coach and principal or superintendent.
  4. Assists in motivating and instructing student athletes in game strategies and techniques.
  5. Assists in developing a winning program that results in student athletes that achieve their potential academically, athletically, socially, and morally
  6. Comply with all federal, state and local laws and board policies and procedures.
  7. Utilize professional behavior in all school-related interactions.
  8. Assists the head coach with instructing players in the rules, regulations, equipment, and techniques of the sport.
  9. Organizes and directs individual and small group practice activities/exercises as directed by the head coach.
  10. Assess player’s skill, monitors players during competition and practice, and keeps the head coach informed of the athletic performance of students.
  11. Follows established procedures in the event of an athlete’s injury.
  12. Models sports-like behavior and maintains appropriate conduct towards players, officials, and spectators.
  13. Participates in special activities to include parent’s night, banquets, award nights, and pep assemblies.
  14. Performs support tasks such as distributing and maintaining emergency data cards, and other related records.
  15. Attends staff development meetings, clinics and other professional activities to improve coaching performance.
  16. Tolerates constructive criticism and demonstrates a commitment to all players for a fair opportunity to be a part of the athletic program.
  17. Ensures that personal out-of-school behavior does not conflict with standards for conduct and performance consistent with district’s mission and professional values.
  18. Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by supervisor or designee.
